Beyond raw speed, the biggest difference is consistency. Copper lines are more sensitive to noise, aging, and distance.
Stability
- DSL: Can degrade with older wiring, loose joints, moisture, and long loop distance.
- Fiber: More resistant to electromagnetic interference and typically delivers more consistent throughput.
Latency
Fiber networks often provide lower and more stable latency, which helps with online gaming, VoIP calls, and video meetings.
When DSL Feels “Fine”
If you’re close to the serving equipment and the copper is in good condition, DSL can be usable for basic browsing—but heavy streaming, WFH, or multi‑device households will usually benefit from fiber.
